Presentation and History

The objective of the museum is to acquire, conserve and display the aircraft, equipment and associated paraphernalia that constitute the historical heritage of the Spanish Air Force.

It has an exterior exhibition and seven hangars. They house aircraft, uniforms, medals and decorations, vehicles, mock-ups, and other aviation-related displays.

Following the end of the Spanish Civil War and the creation of the Air Force, the idea was conceived to create a museum that would reflect the evolution and history of our aeronautics.

Since 1975, the museum has been based at Cuatro Vientos, Madrid. Thereafter, it has been extended many times and has become a European reference for aeronautics.

Visits and Rules

Opening October 12.

The museum is situated at Cuatro Vientos Air Base.

Entrance is via the A-5, direction Madrid, kilometre 10,500.

Rules

  • Visitors must follow the instructions of security personnel and museum staff at all times
  • Visitors must show their entrance ticket whenever they are requested to do so by security personnel or museum staff, and they must retain said ticket until the end of their visit
  • The museum is a no smoking zone and smoking is prohibited
  • It is forbidden to touch the equipment on display
  • Visitors must follow the clearly signalled pathways and must not divert from them
  • Throughout the visit please pay attention to the fact that many of the contents on display have sharp surfaces and / or edges
  • Behaviour which can be interpreted as unruly or which troubles or offends other visitors may result in expulsion from the premises
  • The museum is not responsible in any way for any damage to persons or property that visitors may incur as a result of not complying with any of the rules laid out above

Opening Times

Daily from 10.00 to 14.00, except Monday. Closed on the following days: January 1 and 6; the month of August; Good Friday and Maundy Thursday; December 10 (the day of the patron saint of aviation); December 24, 25 and 31, and other days established in the annual calendar.

Parking free, from 10.00 – 14.00.

Cafeteria from 10.00 – 13.30.

Point of sale from 10.00 – 13.30.

Groups

From Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 – 14.00. Prior authorization for the visit should be requested by letter or email (museodelaire@ea.mde.es).

It is recommended to make requests in advance by telephone from Monday to Friday. Minimum group size is ten people.

Photographs and /or filming

In the case of photographs or filming for personal use, it is not necessary to request any type of authorization.

It is necessary to request permission in advance by fax (91 710 68 47) if the visitor intends to distribute photographs or films via means of the press or any other form of mass communication. Any permission granted will comply with Instruction 65/2004 of March 31of the Secretary of State for Defence

Public Transport

Blas and Cia. buses on the route Madrid with Alcorcón - Móstoles - Villaviciosa de Odón y Navalcarnero.

The closest Metro and Renfe station is Cuatro Vientos. This is about 1 kilometre from the Museum.

Donations

Protocol for the acceptance of donations

To donate: “Give (money or goods) for a good cause, for example to a charity.” Oxforddictionaries.com

The donation of cultural possessions is one of the main ways by which the Museum of Aeronautics and Astronautics (hereafter MAA) can increase its collections.

By means of this document, the MAA aims to provide information about the appropriate way to donate an object under current legislation.

The procedure should be initiated as follows:

  • It is recommended that initial contact is made with the museum, by telephoning 91 5091690, or by faxing 91 7106847, so that a prior assessment of the interest of the object can be carried out. The main step, however, is for the owner of the piece to make a written offer of donation that will include a detailed description of the piece, identification of the owner, and an express declaration of ownership of the property. Standard forms are available from the MAA
  • If the offer is of interest to the MAA, the holder of the property may be asked to deposit the piece with the museum on a temporary basis to enable a detailed study of the object. Finally, a report will be issued about the suitability of the acceptance of the property. This will be in accordance with the scientific criteria laid down in the Museological Plan of the MAA
  • The direction of the MAA will provide information about the offer and forward the documents to the Ministry of Culture for its resolution, following in this way the orders of Spanish Historical Heritage Law 16/1985, 8th additional ruling
  • Depending upon the reports presented, if the offer is accepted it will proceed to the stage of Ministerial Order processing. If the offer is rejected, it will proceed to the stage of the lifting of temporary storage
  • The resolution adopted will be communicated to the MAA and the interested donor

Despite the understandable wishes of many of the donors, the MAA cannot commit to exhibit all of the objects that are donated, and for this reason they will not accept donations which have conditions attached.

Completion of document about an offer of donation

  • Personal details should be completed in full
  • The descriptive information section about the piece or pieces offered for donation should be completed to the greatest extent possible
  • It is desirable that the object offered for donation is accompanied by two photographs. If it is being sent by post, the photographs should be 10x15cm. If it is being sent by email, the photographs should have a minimum resolution of 300 d.p.i, in a jpg o tiff format
  • The form can be submitted in one of the following ways:
